PREMIER LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS: WOLVERHAMPTON vs MAN UNITED

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Picture 47

Wolves fans are calling out for a refund on their tickets to yesterday’s match. Wolves coach McCarthy made the odd decision to replace his entire starting line (aside from US goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann) from the upset win against Tottenham. You are looking at second string Wolves against Man United’s best.

It was a 3-0 thrashing in United’s favor.  McCarthy’s explanation is that he wanted to conserve top players for the weekend.  In all fairness, Bolton is next and Wolves need to be their best against mid-tier opponents.  Conceding games to league-leaders is sometimes necessary for clubs on the brink of relegation.  Wolves can avoid demotion if they stay focused.

CLUB WORLD CUP VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: ESTUDIANTES vs POHANG STEELERS

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Picture 46

Pohang Steelers were eliminated today in a 2-1 loss to Argentina’s Estudiantes de la Plata. The Korean squad was reduced to 8 men after 6 yellow cards and 3 reds had been issued by a now-unpopular ref.

While FC Barcelona are favorites to win the tournament, Estudiantes Manager Alejandro Sabella is confident that his boys can give the Spanish squad a run for their money. With Messi, Ibra, Xavi, and Iniesta all in peak health, it will take an act of god to stop the Blaugrana (if they can beat Atlante and make to the finals, that is).

PREMIER LEAGUE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: RED DEVILS FALL TO ASTON VILLA

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Picture 36

Yesterday’s big upsets in the premiership had something in common. United lost to Villa on a header from Gabby Agbonlahor. Wolves overcame Tottenham with a Kevin Doyle Header.

United fans have to wonder why Sir Alex kept a fire-hot Michael Owen out of United’s starting XI. It was the first loss of the season at Old Trafford. A win would have put the Red Devils in line with Chelsea.

FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP – DEC 9th – 19th

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Picture 28

The competition is only 6 years old, but its roots go back for decades.  The tournament is, in theory, a year-end celebration of the world’s best football clubs.  Champions from each continent are competing in the United Arab Emirates from December 9th – 19th.  Competitors include:

FC Barcelona: Champions League Winners
Club Estudiantes de la Plata: Libertadores Cup winners
Aukland City FC: OFC Club Championship winners
Pohang Steelers: Asian Champions League winners
TP Mazembe: CAF Champions League winners
Atlante Futbol Club: CONCACAF Champions Cup winners

And representing the host nation will be Al Ahli FC.

Picture 29

MLS teams need to figure out how to be more competitive in CONCACAF cup competition. If America’s best club can make it into a tournament with the UEFA Champions League winners, club soccer in this country will flourish. In order to make this happen, American clubs need to rally together and figure out how to play more games in multiple tournaments. While base salary for MLS players is staggeringly low, the organizations must understand that more games will lead to more competition, which will (we have to believe it) bring more money and fan support to clubs.

Both teams played incredibly well. Dynamo opened up with an early set-piece goal, but eventually fell to a classic performance from the Blaugrana. Xavi equalized in the 33rd and Messi had a game winner in the final minutes of regulation.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM CHELSEA vs MAN CITY

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Carlos Tevez is a hero in city of Manchester, not only among City supporters but also among the Red Devils who (until yesterday) had nothing but ill-will toward their former striker.  Sweet Irony!  Chelsea is officially beatable.  United is officially back in the running for a top-of-the-table finish.  City is, well, a team.

CHARLIE DAVIES TO GIVE UPDATE ON FITNESS TOMORROW

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Picture 13

Charlie Davies was catapulted onto the global football scene in ‘08 with critical goals scored throughout international competition.  A stellar qualifying run was cut short on October 13th, 2009, when a car crash left Davies in critical condition.  Another passenger lost her life.

Since being released from the hospital in November, Davies has been at a rehab facility in Delaware, working to regain his strength.  A badly broken leg, a broken elbow, and a lacerated bladder could have easily taken him out of the game for life, though Charlie is hell-bent on getting back in the game.  In an interview with ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap, scheduled to air on December 4th, Davies makes clear that he intends to play in South Africa.

We also learned that Davies has been training with teammate Oguchi Onyewu (also injured) at the same Delaware facility.  If these guys can get fit, the US squad will have a fighting chance.

ONELOVE salutes Charlie Davies on making a remarkable recovery.  Keep up the hard work!

THE ROAD TO JO’BURG – EUROPEAN PLAYOFFS THIS WEEK

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Happy Monday! This week is all about South Africa. The final European qualifiers will be held on Wednesday for France/Ireland, Greece/Ukraine, Russia/Slovenia, and Portugal/Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Pepe tangles with Bosnia’s Msimovic on Saturday.

Ireland, who lost 1-0 to France in Dublin this Saturday, will head to Paris in need of a minor miracle on Wednesday. France may have the star power, but they will need to stay focused and fill in gaps left by the absences of Toulalan, Ribery, and Abidal. This ought to go France’s way.

Ukraine hosts Greece after a 0-0 draw in Athens on Saturday. Both teams are in top form, though many speculate that Greece will find the win with a slight attacking advantage.

Portugal heads to Bosnia-Herzegovina with a 1 goal lead in the aggregate. Nani has done a great job filling in for C. Ronaldo, though it’s difficult to pick a favorite going into this match.

After a well balanced match in Moscow, Russia lead Slovenia 2-1 heading into Wednesday. Russian captain and Arsenal sharp-shooter Andrei Arshavin will have to step up in order to keep Slovenia out of the running.
