Barcelona takes the lead in La Liga standings as they defeat Real Madrid 1-0. Ibrahimovic, who came in as a sub for Henry,  scored the sole goal off a volley from a Daniel Alves cross in the 56th minute. Cristiano Ronaldo almost gave Madrid its first goal in the 20th minute, but was denied by Victor Valdes. CR9 had his shining moments, showing great form and having great touches on the ball. Ronaldo’s replacement, Benzema, nearly equalized the game in the 80th minute with a shot just over the bar.

Barcelona now leads La Liga with 30 points, Madrid behind them with 28.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence has proven to be a blessing in disguise. As the star player readies himself for a battle with Barcelona next weekend, his teammates are learning to work as a unit. Today’s victory against Santander helped to further solidify some on-field dynamics that needed to be ironed out in time for CR9’s return. Higuain, pictured above, is the real thing. Benzema seems to be more in-tune with the squad, and Kaka is playing to his potential.

As the young guys take over, it’s clear that the Raul era (and the Van Nistelrooy era, for that matter) is long gone. The culture will change. The philosophy will change. But there will be a future if they can stay at the top of the table. Not an easy standard to maintain, but that’s what they bought into.

Real face Barcelona next weekend – 11/29.
