EVERTON GAINS REAL MOMENTUM

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Everton managed a convincing 3-1 victory over Manchester United on Saturday, thanks to some brilliant work from second-half subs. All favoritism aside, Donovan has stepped up in Fellaini’s (and Cahill’s) absence. You have to wonder if they can fight back into the top 5.  It’s possible.  And if UEFA comes calling, be it Europa or Champions, the Merseysiders will surely seek an extension on Donovan’s contract.

BEST OF EUROPE: These Are The Chaaampiooons!

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

David Beckham’s first match against former club Manchester United was a bit anticlimactic thanks in large part to the stellar play of striker Wayne Rooney.

Playing at the San Siro in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 Tuesday, Rooney was nothing short of magnificent while netting two late goals in just eight minutes to give United a 3-2 victory over Beckham and AC Milan. The first goal came in the 66th minute when Rooney headed home a cross from substitute Antonio Valencia; he used his head again for his second score, knocking in a pass from Darren Fletcher. The scores were Rooney’s first European goals of a year, which give him a total of 25 for the season.

Milan got on the board first when Ronaldinho scored in the third minute off a Beckham free kick. Paul Scholes made it a 1-1 match with a goal in the 36th minute. After the break it was all Rooney until Milan’s Clarence Seedorf drew the Rossoneri to within one, hitting the back of the net at the 85-minute mark.

In other Champions League action, Lyon stunned red-hot Real Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their showdown. Jean Makoun netted the match’s lone goal when he scored on a rocket shot from 25-yards out. Madrid dominated every facet of the match except the scoreboard. The squad had six shots on goal compared to four for Lyon; it also attempted three more corners and held the ball for 66 percent of the match.

The closest Madrid got to lighting up the scoreboard came in the first half when Gonzalo Higuaín received a quality pass from Cristiano Ronaldo but couldn’t manage to get past defender Jean-Alain Boumsong. In the second half, Ronaldo tried his best from 25-yards away but was rejected by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Heading into the match, the return of former Lyon star Karim Benzema dominated headlines. Benzema entered the match in the 64th minute as a substitute for Higuaín and had little to show leading up to the final whistle.

Despite allowing an away goal, Madrid’s statistical dominance Tuesday will give it an advantage when Lyon travels to the Bernabeu March 10. United will take its distinct goal advantage home to Old Trafford when it faces Milan again the same day.

PREMIER LEAGUE ROUNDUP: United Stand Strong Despite Villa Draw

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

Manchester United inched closer to regaining the Premier League lead Wednesday – drawing 1-1 at Aston Villa.

Playing with just 10 men after Nani was sent off for a poor challenge on Stiliyan Petrov at the 29 minute mark, Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad used all its resources to keep it a 1-1 contest. An own goal from Villa’s James Collins in the 23rd minute gave United all it needed to pull within one point of league leader Chelsea. Manchester avenged its early season loss to Villa, when Martin O’Neill’s side broke a nearly 30-year-old losing streak at Old Trafford, downing the Red Devils 1-0.

The victor’s biggest concern after the draw will surely be the health of star midfielder Ryan Giggs. Giggs left the pitch after a clash with Villa’s Steven Sidwell and was seen exiting the stadium with his arm in a sling. The severity of the injury is unknown, but with a Champions League showdown at AC Milan set for Tuesday, United will certainly be keeping close tabs on his progress.

EPL standings as of Feb 11th

Meanwhile, the Blues found themselves on the receiving end of a 2-1 loss to red-hot Everton. Louis Saha provided both scores for the Toffees, first hitting home a header to make the score 1-1 then netting the winning goal in the 75th minute. Everton has been on a role as of late, going 5-1-1 in its last seven matches; the squad is in the middle of a string of four straight contests against teams in the top half of the table; Everton opened the run with a 1-0 loss at Liverpool and it’ll finish things up with matches against Manchester United and Tottenham.

Arsenal kept pace with the league’s top two, recording a 1-0 win over Liverpool. Abou Diaby scored the match’s lone goal when he headed in a cross from Tomas Rosicky in the 72nd minute. The Gunners – currently in third in the league – put themselves in prime position to make a late-season run, pulling to within six points of Chelsea and narrowing the gap with United to just five points. Upcoming matches against Stoke City, Sunderland, Burnley and Hull City should keep Arsene Wenger’s side on the winning path as it heads down the stretch.

ONELOVE 2010: PLAYERS TO WATCH – Tim Howard

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

By Gerry Maravilla

Great goalkeepers are like fine wines in that they only improve with age. No goalkeeper fits that bill better than the U.S.’s own Tim Howard. The 30-year-old keeper from New Jersey got his start in the game when former U-17 assistant coach Tim Mulqueen began to mentor him in his early teens. After successful highs school campaigns, Howard transitioned into the now defunct United Soccer Leagues playing for the New Jersey Imperials. Howard’s relationship with Mulqueen then came into play and his mentor brought the young keeper to the MLS MetroStars in 1998.

By 2001, Howard had won the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award and attracted the attention of the Senior U.S. International Team. After playing for the youth team in 1999, Howard earned his first official cap in 2002 in a friendly against Ecuador. However, it was a transfer in 2003 that made Howard a household name around the world.

English football giants Manchester United signed Howard and promptly placed him in the starting position. He had an impressive first season, but later struggled to meet the demands of the highly competitive English Premiership. After 45 appearances with Manchester United, Howard transferred to Everton in 2006. Since his debut he become Everton’s starting keeper and has even captained for the English club.

Howard has had a successful career abroad, but his recent performances with the U.S. National Team have made him the respected athlete he is today. In 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Howard helped lift hits team to a 2-1 victory over region rivals, Mexico. Under the leadership of coach Bob Bradley, Howard and the U.S. squad toppled number one-ranked Spain at the 2009 Confederations Cup. Eight saves led to a shutout against Spanish favorites, marking the first time Spain has been shutout since 2007. Howard’s talents were recognized by FIFA, who awarded him the Golden Glove Award for best goalkeeper.

The U.S. will have a tough first match in South Africa this year as the team gears up to face England. After a disappointing campaign in 2006, the U.S. is sure to want to leave a strong impression upon the international scene more in line with last year’s Confederations Cup. Will the U.S. make it into the knockout stages? Can they perhaps reach the final? Whatever the outcome, Howard is sure to play an integral part in it.

UNITED TROUNCE POMPEY TO GO TOP OF PREMIERSHIP

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Legendary Manchester United striker Denis Law presented Wayne Rooney with the #10 jersey in 2007.  At the time, few believed that the young striker would create a legacy of Law’s proportion.  Well, he has.  The Wayne Rooney era is underway.

With today’s 5-0 victory over Portsmouth, United push Chelsea out of first place.  What’s more?  Chelsea will have Arsenal to deal with before they can reclaim the top spot.

ONELOVE 2010: PLAYERS TO WATCH – Park Ji-Sung

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

By Gerry Maravilla

Park has only improved with age/photo credit: Associated Press

Since helping the South Korean National Team reach the semi-finals in the 2002 World Cup, midfielder Park Ji-Sung has risen to international stardom. Ji-Sung began his career playing for Kyoto Purple Sanga in Japan, but his performance and winning goal against Portugal in 2002 saw a transfer to the Dutch team PSC Eindhoven. Working under the former South Korea National Team coach Guss Hiddink, Ji-Sung excelled after working through a rough patch of injuries. Once he regained physical fitness, he quickly regained his winning form.

While at Eindhoven, Ji-Sung had a total of 64 appearances and scored 11 goals, impressive considering he acts primarily as a defensive midfielder. During his time in the Dutch league, Park became so beloved by the Eindhoven fans that they wrote a song about him entitled, “Song for Park.”

Ji-Sung’s outstanding performances on both the international and club scenes attracted the attention of the English Premier League and he signed a deal to join Manchester United in 2005. 2006 cemented Park as a South Korean starter following his equalizing goal against France in that year’s World Cup.  He has worn the Captain’s armband for both his club and home country and, contrary to the general rules of soccer, age has only helped Ji-Sung improve.

Currently the 28-year-old Ji-Sung has 137 appearances and 13 goals with Manchester United, with goal number 13 coming as recently as this past weekend.  Park has earned 84 caps with the senior Korean National Team and 11 international goals. It is without question that he will be an essential part of South Korea’s game in South Africa this year, but will Park Ji-Sung be enough to help South Korea make it out of Group B and earn his home nation a spot in the knockout stages? Considering that 2002 was the first time South Korea had ever made it out of the group-stages, there will be lots of eyes of the team and on Park Ji-Sung. Here’s hoping both rise to the occasion.

MAN UNITED VS ARSENAL

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

Fabregas, Rooney, Bendtner, Berbatov and Gallas are just a few of the names that will highlight this weekend’s clash of Premier League heavyweights, as Manchester United travels to Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal.

Though there’s still a long road ahead – and a handful of teams vying for the top spot in the Premier League – the winner of the match could possibly be the one hoisting the league title at season’s end. A key match-up to watch will be the play of United’s defense against the Gunners attack, featuring Cesc Fabregas, Andrei Arshavin and, most likely, Nicklas Bendtner who fills in for van Persie and newly injured Eduardo.

United will be without stalwart defender Rio Ferdinand, who received a four match ban Thursday for striking Hull City forward Craig Fagan during Manchester’s 4-0 win Sunday.
The defensive unit has been under fire lately and aside from bringing Chris Smalling in from Fulham – which won’t help the team’s cause until next season – Sir Alex Ferguson has done little to alleviate the problems at the back.

Goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar will have to be at the top of his game, as Arsenal’s front line will surely put the pressure on him. But if his recent performances are any indication, the lanky Dutchman should be up to the test, recording 25 saves and four clean sheets – three of which have come in the last two months – in just seven league matches this season. The player to watch Sunday will be stationed in the opposite goal, though. Gunners’ keeper Manuel Almunia could be in for a world of hurt if William Gallas and Sol Campbell aren’t fit for the task of defending Wayne Rooney and the languid Dimitar Berbatov.

With a match too close to call on either end of the pitch, it may be up to the men in the middle to snatch a victory. Fielding one of the best midfield units in the Premier League, Arsenal will hold the advantage over United. Manchester was built from the ends in and if Sunday’s match turns into a battle at mid-field, the Red Devils are bound to fall apart after 90 minutes in London.

Who do you think has the edge?

ONE MORE TIME FOR ROONEY!

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The Red Devils have crushed Roberto Mancini’s chances for a League Cup title in his first season at City. Today’s Manchester Derby may have been a mixture of good and bad play on both ends, but the indomitable Wayne Rooney carried the torch once again. It was 3-1 at the final whistle.

Oh and we give the United fans a C- for pelting Craig Bellamy in the head with god-knows-what.

BACK ON TOP

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

Though decimated by injuries on the defensive side, Manchester United has still found a way to the top of the Premier League standings – a feat, due in large part, to the play of striker Wayne Rooney.

Currently leading the league in goals with 19, the 24 year old has been the bright spot Sir Alex Ferguson has desperately needed this season. Currently, Jermain Defoe, Darren Bent and Didier Drogba are second in the Premier League with 14 goals each.

By dispatching Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo this past summer, Ferguson put all his money on Rooney to lead the team. And boy has it paid off.

After playing second fiddle to Ronaldo for his entire career, the Liverpool native has finally become the centerpiece of the Manchester offense. Through just 22 games, Rooney has already eclipsed his past scoring mark of 16 goals set in the 2005-06 season. A four-goal performance in a 4-0 thrashing of Hull City Saturday helped elevate him from one of England’s best, to one of the world’s best – and rumor has it, a new $140 million contract is soon to follow. The stout striker did most of his damage in the second half against the Tigers, scoring three goals in the final eight minutes to seal the victory at Old Trafford.

With matches at Arsenal and Aston Villa set for the coming weeks though, Rooney will need more help at the back if he’s to keep Manchester in the top spot – a place it hasn’t been since November. The return of defender Rio Ferdinand will surely help the squad’s cause, but an end to the drama surrounding stellar center back Namanja Vidic is also a must if the team is to push ahead. Rumors of a summer departure to Barcelona – coupled with Vidic’s mysterious ailment prior to a clash with Leeds – have left United’s defense in limbo.

Despite the early-season question marks surrounding Rooney’s ability to lead United and the current issues at his back, he’s found a way to be the man at the Theatre of Dreams. Something Manchester supporters are truly happy to see.
