ONELOVE SPOTLIGHT: Stevan Jovetic

Despite being knocked out by Bayern Munich on goal aggregate, you have to appreciate Fiorentina’s performance today.  Anyone who saw the game couldn’t help noticing the talents of 20 year old Stevan Jovetic.  He had 2 goals on the day and immediately became a summer-transfer target for larger clubs.

Jovetic started his career at Partizan when he was 16 and was named the squad’s captain just two years later.  After scoring 12 goals in 51 appearances for the club, Jovetic received interest from high-profile teams such as Manchester United and Real Madrid, but instead made the move to Serie A squad Fiorentina.  He netted two goals to beat Liverpool in last season’s group stage of the UEFA Champions League.  After today’s performance, the young stunner has surely earned a place in Viola history.

ONELOVE SUPER SUPREME DREAM SHOT

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Listen up!  We will be giving away 2 tickets to the MLS match of your choice if you win this challenge.  Ready?  It’s called the ONELOVE SUPER SUPREME DREAM SHOT CONTEST (or OLSSDSC or simply, our new contest).  You have one shot to make the world stop and take note.

All you need is a video camera.  If you have a cell phone that was made in the last 5 years, chances are, you have a video camera.

Got a camera?  Good.

Now show us the most creative way to score a goal.  Keep in mind, all you have to do is kick a ball and make it go into a specified area.  It can be a an actual goal, a basketball hoop, a doggie door, a tree-house window, etc etc.  The more stuff you bounce the ball off of, the better.  Remember Michael Jordan and Larry Bird’s “Nothing But Net” commercials?  Probably not.  If you do, you’ll be able to get more creative.

Anyway, show us what you got!  Remember, the winner gets two tickets to any regular-season MLS game from the upcoming season.  Submit videos to the ONELOVE FC Facebook fan page and remember to introduce yourself in your video.  The deadline for submissions will be April 1st.  GOOD LUCK!

ps… be safe.  if you’re video puts anyone’s life in danger, we won’t consider it.

EVERTON AT THEIR VERY BEST

Monday, March 8th, 2010

What a performance from the Toffees! Arteta was on fire and Donovan came on late in the game to give a near-perfect 15 minutes of play. 5-1 was the end result.

If the MLS labor disputes are resolved in the next week, Donovan will have to return to the LA Galaxy to begin the 2010 season.  Do you think LD should stay in England or return home?  Which would be better for the USA’s chances in South Africa this summer?

AROUND THE WORLD: International Friendlies

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

By Yoni Ginsberg

In preparation for the World Cup, there will be some International Friendlies this week. Lets take a look at the matches:

Ireland vs Brazil- Croke Park hosted the first game today with Ireland taking on the Brazilians. Keith Andrews had an own-goal for Ireland, but it was Robinho’s goal that will surely grab headlines tomorrow. The Santos striker is showing us that he will be ready for South Africa, despite a lackluster stint at Manchester City.

The remaining matches will be held on Wednesday.

Germany vs Argentina- The European powerhouse faces Messi and friends at Bayern’s Allianz Arena. This match should have a final feel to it as I’m sure each of these coaches will want to test his squad’s potential. Prediction: Germany with the home field advantage, 2-0.

Netherlands vs USA- American head coach Bob Bradley has filled his squad with non MLS players including Joze Altidore, Landon Donovan, and Maurice Edu (who most recently grabbed a game-winner in the Galsgow derby). However, the Dutch are always an extremely technical team with great passing and discipline. Prediction: Wesley Sneijder with a brace, Netherlands 3-1.

England vs Egypt- The Three Lions face the newly crowned African champions in Wembley Stadium.  Rooney, Lampard, and new captain Rio Ferdinand shouldn’t have trouble taking on Amr Zaki and Mido. Prediction: England 3-0.

France vs Spain- Perhaps the day’s most interesting and exciting match has Les Blues taking on the holding European champions.  The game is in the Stade De France and the crowd will surely play a factor in this one. France, however, will need to do a lot in order to keep up with a team (which I think) is better than they are. Prediction: 1-1, Benzema and David Villa.

What do you think?  Predictions anybody?

ALL HAIL THE KING OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL

Monday, March 1st, 2010

We love Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but 2010 will long be remembered as the year of our lord, Wayne Rooney.  He may not win the Champions League, or the Premiership, or the World Cup… but at this point no single player is more capable of winning them all.

In Rooney, we have witnessed the maturation of a pure striker in his prime. He is an archetype, breaking the game down to a balance of bullish force and complete fluidity.

SPANISH GIANTS ARE STARVED FOR COMPETITION

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

You’ve got Barcelona and Real Madrid, and a few mid-table contenders, but what has happened to Spanish football!?

Today’s 5-1 victory over Tenerife was almost unfair. Coming off of a loss to Lyon, you have to wonder if Madrid is suffering from a lack of competition in La Liga. Here are highlights.

Barça’s 2-1 victory over Málaga was more conservative, though a 1-1 tie to Stuttgart in the UCL begs a similar question about the quality of their competitors.

The two Spanish giants are expected to win everything, but the quality of their play will almost certainly suffer if they can’t be challenged. All across Europe the title races are getting tighter and tighter with many teams competing for top spots. In turn, we see stunning performances from Lyon, Bordeaux, Stuttgart, and Panathinaikos in the Champions League.

Here’s a look at Barça vs Málaga…

9-MAN CHELSEA BULLIED BY TEVEZ AND BELLAMY

Manchester City has opened up the title race in England.

This was not your run-of-the-mill showdown between top clubs.  In the days leading up to today’s showdown, the Wayne Bridge/John Terry ‘baby mama’ situation managed to overshadow the more substantial problems facing the league leaders.  Their defense is weak, their goalkeeper is out, and their position in the league is no longer secure.

Manchester City managed to end a 37 game unbeaten streak for Chelsea at home.

EARTH CONSCIOUS: NIKE PRESENTS BRASIL ‘BLACK’ SERIES

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Nike has unveiled a revolutionary apparel line for Brasil’s national squad.  Jerseys, shorts, hoodies, tracktop, and slickers are all made from 100% recycled polyester…and they look AMAZING.  Simple, subtle, badass.

SLAMXHYPE’s James Oliver says, “By using recycled polyester for its new range of national jerseys, Nike prevented nearly 13 million plastic bottles, totaling nearly 254,000 kg of polyester waste, from going into landfill sites. This amount would be enough to cover more than 29 football pitches.”
