DAVE KIRBY ON ‘15 MINUTES’

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Istanbul, 2005. Liverpool take to the dressing room at halftime, trailing AC Milan 3-0 in the Champions League Final. They emerge 15 minutes later to deliver the greatest comeback performance in Champions League history.

Our friends at the Kicking & Screening Festival (June 1st-5th in NYC) have shared with us an inside look at ‘15 Minutes That Shook The World,’ a comedic journey through the pivotal halftime break featuring rare performances from legends Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard. The film screens June 1st at Tribeca Cinemas.

A few words from Writer/Co-director Dave Kirby…

“Like every Liverpool fan (and every football fan) I always wondered just what the hell happened in that dressing room at half time in Istanbul. Without doubt it was the greatest and most dramatic comeback in football history of one of the greatest and emotional nights of my life. As a drama it had everything – a beginning, middle, and end – tragedy – tears –hero characters – a dramatic twist – ecstasy …in fact even Shakespeare couldn’t have written it better.

In my mythical dreams I always preferred to believe that Rafa gave some kind of Winston Churchill / Martin Luther King type speech or that maybe the players were inspired by the passionate, emotional rendition of ‘You’ll never walk alone’ which echoed around the stadium during the half time interval. No chance!

When the reports came back they all described a dressing room of complete calm and composure. I was gutted. Surely some bastard got angry? To me it felt like ‘Braveheart’ without the rally cry of: ‘Freedom’ or ‘Zulu’ without the song: ‘Men of Harlech. It was definitely that mythical yearning which prompted me to write the Istanbul story as I saw it …with humour! Much had been written and filmed about that fateful evening but not in movie format or with humour and certainly not in a way which also allows the viewer to witness our most bitter rival’s pain.

In Liverpool the humour is brutal and cutting and fundamentally based on ridicule – in many ways similar to New York (‘The Jerky Boys’ phone call tapes are still revered in my city). In Liverpool wherever there’s a compliment, a humorous insult is never far away which is evident in the film – no one escapes it – not even the players and Rafa who attended the premiere and took it in the spirit in which it was written.

Since its release the film has been translated with subtitles into German and Norwegian and is about to hit Asia such is the global appeal of Liverpool FC. That night that will stay in our hearts and minds forever. As a Liverpool fan and writer I’m proud that it’s now been captured forever in a light-hearted 100% Liverpool tale. ”

THE TALK OF ENGLAND

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

After defeating Machester City to finish 4th in the Prem, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp wants to sign Spain’s veteran striker Raul from Real Madrid in a bid to strengthen Spurs’ Champions League chances. Spurs will also sign Craig Bellamy in a £6million deal after he fell out with Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini.

Roberto Mancini is set to stay at Manchester City, though the owners are seeking to acquire England boss Fabio Capello in 2012.

Fabio Capello has made it clear that he will exclude Rio Ferdinand from the World Cup roster if the captain is unfit. Carragher, King, and Terry have all been penciled in to join the 23-man squad. Capello’s provisional 30-man World Cup roster will also include Fulham striker Bobby Zamora.

Fulham may invite Steven Sidwell to Craven Cottage after the midfielder was (basically) laid-off by Aston Villa. Villa are also eager to sign Croatia coach Slaven Bilic should current coach Martin O’neill depart.

Aware of O’neill’s failed relationships at Aston Villa, Liverpool is courting the Irishman to replace current manager Rafa Benitez.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are eager to sign Fernando Torres away from Liverpool. In other City news, goalkeeper Shay Given is expected to return from his shoulder injury in time for the start of Ireland’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign in September.

KUYT PULLS 10-MAN LIVERPOOL THROUGH MERSERYSIDE DERBY

It was a weekend full of surprises. Everton’s loss to a 10-man Liverpool squad saw the Reds through to 4th place, thanks to the toughness of Dirk Kuyt. Torres has been out and Gerrard might as well have taken the season off. It’s Kuyt who has carried the torch through these uncomfortable months.

Liverpool Manager Rafa Benitez has already made plans to take over at Juventus next season. Few thought that he’d leave Liverpool in top-4 standing, but it’s looking like he may actually get there.

For anyone unfamiliar with Champions League qualification, England’s top 4 clubs are included each year and Liverpool has long since been a favorite.  If the Reds fail to qualify, they are almost sure to lose their star players.  If the star players go, they’ll most likely be downgraded to a mid-table performer and face more serious troubles – a la Leeds of 10 years ago.

LIVERPOOL vs BOLTON

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Liverpool have actually managed to look like a world class club again, and without the help of Fernando Torres. If Benitez can put the Reds back in line, will he still be interested in going to Juventus?

PREMIER LEAGUE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: LIVERPOOL vs WOLVERHAMPTON

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Picture 9

A home win against Wolverhampton would have been easy for the Liverpool of 4 months ago, but after a decisive loss to bottom-ranked Portsmouth, we weren’t about to jump to conclusions for today’s match.

Alberto Aquilani had his first start since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in a gazillion dollar transfer deal.  He got a standing ovation when he subbed in the final minutes, though he had little (if anything) to do with the win.  The clapping was more of a “welcome to Anfield” toast.

Liverpool started strong with crisp passing and a few graceful attempts on goal.  Twenty minutes in, the tables turned.  Wolverhampton started taking shots and, immediately, Liverpool’s confidence was deflated.  Liverpool rallied in the 60th minute when Steven Gerrard took a beautiful cross out of the air, beating three Wolves defenders and their American goalie (Hahnemann), with a perfect header.

Soon after Gerrard’s goal, Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun came up with a CR9-esque goal from just inside the 18.  It was 2-0 at the final whistle.

HOLY ARSHAVIN!

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Picture 37

Arsenal’s Andrei Arshavin is one of the most entertaining goal scorers on earth and today’s game-winner against Liverpool competes for goal of the week.

Arsene Wenger’s boys are going to be OK, but change is imminent at Liverpool.  The Reds started strong (Kuyt had moments of brilliance) and then, with the own goal, they imploded.

And WHY was Xabi Alonso back to watch his old team suffer?  (Why did he leave in the first place?)  Mascherano wasn’t bringing much to the game and Aquilani was even less effective.  Reflecting on the game as a whole, there doesn’t seem to be a dialogue between Torres and his supporting crew.  As for Benitez, we’ve respectfully decided not to join the angry mob.  The best we can say for him is NOTHING AT ALL.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: LIVERPOOL FACE LYON WITH AILING TORRES

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

rafapresser20091103_275x155

Reds manager Rafa Benitez, shown above, has proclaimed that Fernando Torres can win matches at 80%. That gamble might have payed off against Fulham if the Spaniard hadn’t been spared the agony of a full 90, but it’ll be a much different story against Champions League group leaders Lyon on Wednesday night. As Liverpool’s fate rests on tomorrow’s result, Benitez will have to deal not only with a herniated Torres, but also with a long list of absentees including Steven Gerrard. (more…)
