WOMENS CHAMPS LEAGUE FINALS: Potsdam Wins!

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

The ladies of Potsdam pulled off a victory in PK’s

It was the women’s chance to shine tonight in Madrid as FFC Turbine Potsdam faced off against Olympique Lyonnais in the inaugral final of the Womens Champions League 2010.

The Coliseum Alfonso Pérez in Getafe was a sell out and as part of the new UEFA initiative to promote football to a wider audience and part of the 8 day festival taking on the run up to the main event on Saturday evening.

The game was evenly matched and ended up nil nil at the end of play so had to be decided by penalties. A harsh way to win or lose such an important match but thats the rules and someone always has to win and someone has to lose.

Fatmire Bajramaj hoists the trophy

On this occasion it was the German side, Potsdam that ended as eventual winners, defeating the French 7-6 in the penalty shootout.

Potsdams’ teenage goalkeeper Anna Felicitas Sarholz ended up the goalkeeping hero as she saved 2 penalties and secured the victory after a hard fought 120 minutes of play. Ironically, she had saved 3 penalties in the semi final to help her team to progress to this final, a statistic that most managers of Europes top mens sides would wish that their overpaid goalkeepers could achieve from time to time.

The game may have ended goalless but the teams certainly weren’t toothless as Potsdam held their nerve to claim the European crown 2010.

Background on Women’s Champions leage:

• This competition has replaced the former UEFA Women’s Cup, which ran from 2001/02 until last season.

• This is the first women’s final to be played as a one-off match since the inaugural UEFA Women’s Cup showpiece, won by 1. FFC Frankfurt in the German city.

• All finals from now on will played two nights before the men’s UEFA Champions League decider, and in the same city.

• The other major change was that the eight top-ranked nations now have two competing teams in the competition, the title winners and runners-up. Both Lyon and Potsdam entered as national champions.

RIBERY TO MISS INTER SHOWDOWN

Monday, May 17th, 2010

by Marc Roseblade

Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery is going to miss the Champions League final. The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected his appeal against a 2-match ban following a red card in the Lyon semi-final.

UEFA had already dismissed an appeal, but CAS has ruled out any possibility of a Saturday showing against Inter.

Bayern had appealed to UEFA with the hope that UEFA would cut the ban to just the one game, which would have allowed Ribery to play in the final as he had already missed the second leg of the semi-final against Lyon.

Once again bureaucracy wins the day and sensibility loses out

HOMELESS WORLD CUP: A Call To Action

Monday, April 19th, 2010

by Mona Chatterjee

My first experience with the Homeless World Cup began 3 years ago when I happened upon “Kicking It”, a film chronicling the lives of seven players as they journey to Cape Town 2006 Homeless World Cup and become heroes. The Homeless World Cup, which began in 2003, is an annually held international football tournament uniting and celebrating teams of people who are homeless but have rebuilt their lives through the power of the beautiful game.

I traveled to the HWC in Milan, Italy last year to volunteer with the program and saw first-hand how dramatic the program truly is, meeting players and coaches from all over the world. These people prove that football has the power to help people who are otherwise disadvantaged (whether it is because of drug/alcohol abuse, political exile or poverty) to build up their self-confidence and lead them towards a path for a better future. Numerous players I met have now become leaders in their communities. Some are now coaches for local street soccer outreach programs and even semi-professional football teams. Over 75% of the players worldwide have been reunited with family members, moved into homes and are gainfully employed.

I’d like to briefly introduce you to a few inspirational players.

Michele da Silva represented Brazil at the Copenhagen 2007 Homeless World Cup, winning best female player before going on to be selected to represent Brazil in the national under 21’s women’s team.

David Duke represented Scotland at the Gothenberg 2004 Homeless World Cup and is now the founder of Street Soccer Scotland that works with 500 homeless people.

The HWC has supported and worked with over 30,000 people annually and has generated a force that fosters grassroots football projects throughout the world. Over 60 nations are planning to attend the upcoming HWC in Rio de Janeiro this September to proudly represent their countries. Our current goal at the HWC is to help as many teams/players as possible to attain that goal. There are many HWC volunteers currently raising funds for needy players around the world. I would like to raise as much awareness for the HWC in the United States as possible and, to that end, am spearheading volunteer programs here for anyone who wants to help us coordinate fundraising events and viewing parties for the upcoming World Cup in South Africa to raise money for the HWC.

I am traveling to Finland this June to interview the players, coaches and managers of the Finland Homeless Street Soccer team and see firsthand their national finals. Last year in Milan, I was lucky enough to meet the young players in the Finnish national team and their incredible coach whose own story is beautiful and selfless. Their team was so cohesive and close it brought tears to my eyes on my last day with them. Many countries do not have such well-coordinated and publicly supported homeless national street soccer programs, so my overall goal is to use the Finnish program as a model for those countries struggling to maintain their own or initiate their own programs. And, in further effort to raise money to help send at least one player to the HWC in 2010, I have set up a donations website and blog where you can follow me as I train for the Santa Claus Marathon in Finland at the Arctic Circle and then blog my trip to Finland.

ARSHAVIN WANTS MORE STARS AT ARSENAL

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

The Arsenal rumor mill was operating at full capacity today.

First off, Jay-Z may buy a stake in the Gunners.  Whether a move like this would benefit Jay (or the sport itself ) in any way is a complete mystery, but it’s worth a shot.

And then we had Andrey Arshavin going public about the squad’s lack of star power.  In an interview with The Sun, Arshavin said -

“Without the variety of players we have less diversity in attack. That allows our opponents to read our combinations more easily. Finally, it results in less ball possession for us and our defense comes under more pressure.”

Arshavin is one of the most effective attacking midfielders on earth.  Like Fabregas, he is the Arsenal philosophy personified.  Will management hear his plea?  Will fresh money from Jay-Z be the answer to Wenger’s talent problem?  Lastly, IS there a shortage of talent at Arsenal?

THE BEST OF EUROPE: Champions League Draw for Final 8

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Now it get’s interesting.  Here are the Quarter-final matchups:

- Arsenal vs Barcelona –   These teams met in the UCL final back in 2006.  It’ll be the first time that Frabregas, a former Barça youth star, will make a visiting appearance at the Nou Camp.  This is the battle that I’ve been waiting for;  two very self-aware squads with brilliant leadership.  It’ll be like a game of chess.

- Manchester United vs Bayern Munich.  This should go United’s way, but it’s impossible to tell.  Both are in tip-top form.

- Inter Milan vs CSKA Moskva.  Smart money is on Inter.

- Lyon vs Bordeaux.  A tough call.  Lyon are in 5th behind 1st place Bordeaux in the Ligue 1, but they only trail by 2 points.  Bordeaux may have a slight edge, but either side could make it to the final.

THE BEST OF EUROPE: The Bridge Is Over! Inter Advance, Chelsea To Focus on Premiership…

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Disappointment. Disappointment not only for Chelsea’s players, not only for Chelsea’s fans, but also, disappointment for me.  The best Champions League matchup in the current round ended up being one huge disappointment. Unless, of course, you are an Inter Milan fan.

The Italian leaders did what Italians do best; defend and counter.  And they did it magnificently.  As difficult as it is for me to give credit to him, I shall give credit where it is due. Mourinho did a wonderful job in preparing his titans for this titanic clash. Some questionable first half refereeing decisions proved to be the only truly serious chances from the home side who were simply unable to crack the rock hard defense of Inter.

Samuel Eto’o finished clinically with what should have been at least his second goal of the night but Inter’s true heart and soul came from probably the only single Inter player who I respect: Wesley Sneijder.  He was simply everywhere.  Defending, attacking, passing, dribbling, but most importantly directing.  Everything went through him and nearly every touch he took went the right way.  The Dutch international who started his career at Ajax before having a short and unsuccessful run at Real Madrid, once again proved what an asset he is to Jose’s otherwise bleak side. Yes, I’ll say it again, bleak.

For me this is disappointing because I feel like the best side lost. Argue what you will, Chelsea in my opinion are the third best team in the world, trailing only Manchester United and Pep’s Barça, but from now on in the Champions, I guess I’ll just have to do without them.

BEST OF EUROPE: Wenger’s Boys In Perfect Form

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Arsenal pulled off one of the most decisive Champions League wins in history against Porto on Tuesday. Bendnter bagged his first hat trick, Eboue scored off of a beautiful Arshavin assist, and Nasri scored THE goal of his career.

Will the Gunner’s be able to out-finess more physical teams like Chelsea and Inter?

ONELOVE SPOTLIGHT: Stevan Jovetic

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Stevan Jovetic – photo credit: Getty Images

Despite being knocked out by Bayern Munich on goal aggregate, you have to appreciate Fiorentina’s performance today.  Anyone who saw the game couldn’t help noticing the talents of 20 year old Stevan Jovetic.  He had 2 goals on the day and immediately became a summer-transfer target for larger clubs.

Jovetic started his career at Partizan when he was 16 and was named the squad’s captain just two years later.  After scoring 12 goals in 51 appearances for the club, Jovetic received interest from high-profile teams such as Manchester United and Real Madrid, but instead made the move to Serie A squad Fiorentina.  He netted two goals to beat Liverpool in last season’s group stage of the UEFA Champions League.  After today’s performance, the young stunner has surely earned a place in Viola history.

AROUND THE WORLD: Benfica

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

In a country with a population smaller than that of Los Angeles or New York, a former football power is plotting its return to glory.

Situated in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, Benfica – one of the most decorated teams of the 1960s – has claimed a league-leading 31 Portuguese Liga titles, but has recently fallen on tough times. But in its heyday, it was known as a giant slayer. During an era when Real Madrid had won five-straight European Champions’ Cups, now known as the Champions League, spanning from 1955-60, Benfica was the first to knock the Spanish giant from its lofty perch. In 1961, tiny Benfica claimed the first of two-straight European Champions’ Cups, beating Barcelona to claim the title of best in Europe. The following year the Eagles managed to top Madrid in the finals to win their last European title.

Throughout the rest of the decade, Benfica continued its push for greatness. Making it to the European Cup finals in 1963, ’65 and ’68, the Lisbon squad was one of the top clubs of its day. And it was reflected in the company it kept. After downing Barcelona and Real Madrid in its two cup victories, Benfica clashed with such giants as Milan (1963), Inter (1965) and Manchester United (1968) before the golden age in Lisbon came to a close. By the time the decade was over, the squad had added eight Portuguese Liga titles and three Portuguese Cups to its haul.

The Eagles soared to the top of the soccer ranks on the back of the legendary Eusebio. As the only Benfica player to ever win the Ballon d’Or (1965) and European Golden Boot Awards (1968, 1973), it was Eusebio that carried the club to greatness. Often overlooked in the annals of soccer history, he managed to score an astonishing 727 goals in 715 career matches. He helped Benfica to four more Liga titles and two Portuguese Cups before leaving the club in 1975.

Benfica managed to reach the European Cup final twice in the late 1980s, but after Eusebio left the squad became a shell of its former self. Not only did it drop out of the European scene, but it was struggling to be the best in its own country. Winning just 10 league titles since 1975, with the most recent coming in 2004, the Eagles have given way to rival club Porto. Benfica may have been the class of the Liga in the past, but it’s Porto leading the way now – winning six of the last seven league titles and 24 overall.

The squad has reason to be hopeful of a turnaround, though. Through 20 matches this season, new manager Jorge Jesus has the Eagles back on top of the Liga table. Led by talented players such as Oscar Cardozo, 16 goals, and goalkeeper Quim – who’s allowed just 10 scores this season with 11 clean sheets – the future is looking very bright for Benfica.

BEST OF EUROPE: These Are The Chaaampiooons!

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

By Jake Glavies

David Beckham’s first match against former club Manchester United was a bit anticlimactic thanks in large part to the stellar play of striker Wayne Rooney.

Playing at the San Siro in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 Tuesday, Rooney was nothing short of magnificent while netting two late goals in just eight minutes to give United a 3-2 victory over Beckham and AC Milan. The first goal came in the 66th minute when Rooney headed home a cross from substitute Antonio Valencia; he used his head again for his second score, knocking in a pass from Darren Fletcher. The scores were Rooney’s first European goals of a year, which give him a total of 25 for the season.

Milan got on the board first when Ronaldinho scored in the third minute off a Beckham free kick. Paul Scholes made it a 1-1 match with a goal in the 36th minute. After the break it was all Rooney until Milan’s Clarence Seedorf drew the Rossoneri to within one, hitting the back of the net at the 85-minute mark.

In other Champions League action, Lyon stunned red-hot Real Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their showdown. Jean Makoun netted the match’s lone goal when he scored on a rocket shot from 25-yards out. Madrid dominated every facet of the match except the scoreboard. The squad had six shots on goal compared to four for Lyon; it also attempted three more corners and held the ball for 66 percent of the match.

The closest Madrid got to lighting up the scoreboard came in the first half when Gonzalo Higuaín received a quality pass from Cristiano Ronaldo but couldn’t manage to get past defender Jean-Alain Boumsong. In the second half, Ronaldo tried his best from 25-yards away but was rejected by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Heading into the match, the return of former Lyon star Karim Benzema dominated headlines. Benzema entered the match in the 64th minute as a substitute for Higuaín and had little to show leading up to the final whistle.

Despite allowing an away goal, Madrid’s statistical dominance Tuesday will give it an advantage when Lyon travels to the Bernabeu March 10. United will take its distinct goal advantage home to Old Trafford when it faces Milan again the same day.
